  1. Vulgaires Machins
I got Compter Les Corps more-or-less on impulse from zunior.com after being wowed by the samples. I’m even more wowed by the album. It falls right on the line between what I’d call “punk” and what I’d call “indie rock,” with some slow tempos, piano, and spacious arrangements pulling it one way, and jackhammer drums and monstrous guitar tone pulling it the other. Both vocalists are outstanding, with Mais Guillaume’s vinegar balanced and complemented by Marie-Eve’s soothing harmonies and occasional lead turns. The album is packed with small, smart arrangement details that I just love. The title track, for example, builds harmonic tension before the bridge by repeating its signature riff over a chord that holds instead of changing as it does in the rest of song. I had an awful lot of trouble winnowing my 2006 best-of list to a reasonable length, but if I’d heard this back then, I would have perforce left something else off.

  10. Pocket Genius
Pocket Genius is a Minneapolis act that released its debut album in 2000, but it sounds pretty much like it could have been recorded at the same time as the Replacements, Hüsker Dü, and pre-suck Soul Asylum albums that so clearly influenced it. Pocket Genius doesn’t live up to those comparisons, but they’re tough names to live up to. If you’re appetite for this sort of sound is as boundless as mine, Pocket Genius are worth looking into.

    Hey there,

Thanks for the review of our stuff – Pocket Genius. Just curious how you got your hands on the record as it was really only distributed in the UK until being made available digitally late this year.

    Anyway, glad you enjoyed it!
