  1. Colourbox - On a bit of a retro kick, obviously. I’m a bit surprised at how dated this doens’t sound.
  2. The Connells - Another retro kick. I know the first 3 or 4 Connells records quite well, but I couldn’t recall a single tune from several of the later discs. Trying to see if that’s them, or me. Found one really good song so far (”New Boy”, from Ring)
  3. Say Hi to Your Mom - picked up most of the catalog (thanks to emusic. Like what I’ve heard so far.
  4. The Capstan Shafts
  5. Boyracer
  6. Young Marble Giants
  7. The Deathray Davies
  8. Kraftwerk - I know it’s strange, but I never really listened to Kraftwerk before picking up The Man-Machine. I wonder if Flight of the Conchords consciously used Kaftwerk’s “The Robots” as the template for their “Robots”? Sounds plausible.
  9. Beauty Pill
  10. Crack the Sky - I completely and utterly revile prog rock, except, of course when I don’t. The exceptions that prove the rule include King Crimson, several bands that would probably prefer to be calleded “punk” than “prog,” a verrry small amount of proggy metal, and my most embarrassing lapse*, about half of Crack the Sky’s pre-reunion output (which also includes albums of non-prog hard rock and new wave). Crack the Sky is grandfathered partly due to how much I loved them when I was too young to know better, but I can still enjoy these records despite my lingering uneasiness about whether some of John Palumbo’s lyrics are merely misanthropic (which I’m cool with) or actually racist (which I’m not). I dig ‘em partly because Crack the Sky were never too serious to poke fun at themselves, and partly because of John Palumbo’s excellent (if sometimes troubling) lyrics. He found genuine emotional resonance in songs like “Robots for Ronnie,” “Invaders from Mars,” and “Rangers at Midnight” despite their essential silliness.
*Theoretically, if it were possible to get me drunk enough, I might admit to liking two-and-a-half ’70’s Genesis songs, which would be much more embarrassing. But it’s no longer possible to get me that drunk.
