Apple Betty - Let's Play
At their best — “Pollution,” and “Stagnant,” — Apple Betty remind me strongly of the garagey side of Barbara Manning: tuneful and gritty, with lyrics that will insult no one’s intelligence. At their worst — “Full Inside,” and the unlisted no-bonus track “Sweatpant Boner,” — they play the “we’re cute women, and we we sing raunchy tunes, so we’ll get a lot of attention from the male-dominated music media” card. I hate that card, I wish I could expunge it from the deck.

At a recent show, I thought they played another hated card, “we’re cute women, so we don’t have to play very well, but all the males will still swoon.”

On the other hand, the silk-screen-look packaging of this EP is gorgeous.

It’s this sort of humorlessness that seems to come with the self-proclaimed DC punk territory. Must be something in the water.

Being accused of humorlessness is like that old ‘when did you stop beating your wife?’ gag, isn’t it? There’s just no way to respond gracefully. But hey, you seem to like Achewood, so you can’t be all bad.

Fair enough. I felt that your take on AB was uncharitable, but should have responded to that, rather than perpetuate the cycle of uncharity. I saw AB open for Mr. Airplane Man at the Abbey a few years back, and they did not at all give off the naughty hottie vibe. And I’m glad Achewood provided some common ground — handsome design here, beetubs.
