"My impression of her essay was that Riot Grrl had failed and there music hasn’t seen 'strong' female fronted bands since Riot Grrl’s demise"

Huh, that's pretty much exactly the opposite of how i interpreted it. In fact, I think you've exactly stated the viewpoint that Hopper is complaining about/responding to.

My impression of her essay was that Riot Grrl had failed and there music hasn't seen "strong" female fronted bands since Riot Grrl's demise, which I disagree with.

There might not be a current movement with a cute name attached, and God knows that music journalism just LOVES to catagorize music into genre, sub-genre and sub-sub-genres, but there also isn't that much mainstream rock journalism anymore. Most of the magazines have folded and youtube don't count as a meeting place for like minded music fans to exchange opinions.

I mentioned on Facebook three "bigger" indie bands that are all fronted by female leads who are the face of the band. (My snarky reply being that I'd know the girls in the band but I couldn't tell you the guitar players if you put a gun to my head.)

The bands are out there but there isn't a regional label/magazine/whatever turning that local scene into a major scene. (Would Riot Grrl have existed Calvin Johnson's K Label?)

The music scene, such as it remains, has at once grown larger and smaller. Now every person with $50 for a 4 track can put their video on youtube. (Smaller) Of course, it is also much harder to get that same track onto a forum heard but more than just your friends due to a lack of magazine/radio etc. (Larger)

I didn't even think of that. Not an April Fool's joke, although at least one of those records felt like a joke on me. Pretty sure I will never listen to "Presidence" again.

Yes, I realize there are other ways to listen to music without buying CDs (free via Internet, etc.) And yes, it is also April Fool's Day, so who knows what to believe as truth today.

That's a lot of music in just one month. How do you find the time, money, storage space for all those CDs? I need to get that Robyn Hitchcock.

Hard to believe anyone can have never heard The Cure, but I guess even I am THAT old. I'm actually only familiar with the album Grab That Gun. I'll have to dig up Thieves for the song you mention.
